Historically, more than 1,000 year ago, the Prehistoric Indian Village was a thriving community of more than 1,000 American Indians, gardeners and hunters occupying 70 lodges along the beautiful shore of Lake Mitchell. Take a step into the past to allow this archaeological site to reveal this historical landmark containing many artifacts of early village life. The Boehnen Memorial museum and visitors center has exhibits highlighted in the Patten Gallery. A full-scale walk-through reproduction of an earth lodge and a completely reconstructed buffalo skeleton all focus on the various aspects of the prehistoric lifestyle they once shared. Other discoveries including stones, bones, shells, animal and plant remains are all on exhibit. The Prehistoric Indian Village offers guided tours and audiovisual presentations giving a clear understanding of the early inhabitants. Also, there is a walking tour of the grounds and a partial open excavation. On location is a gift shop with Indian-made pottery and articles.
